As big fans of Willy Wonka, the original movie with Gene Wilder, we thought we’d have our own golden tickets, err bulls that is. We hide five golden bulls (okay they are brass, we couldn’t afford solid gold) in and around Durham for five lucky winners to win a free meal each week for a year*. Each day we reveal more clues here on our website and social media regarding where to find a Golden Bull. If you find one, you must claim it for the prize. Full details below in the “fine print.” Let the hunt begin.
Ground Rules for the Hunt: Please do not destroy any personal property. No bull will be hidden in a location which requires going inside a non-public space. No bull will be buried or sealed inside anything. Nothing will need to be damaged, broken, taken apart, busted, cracked, or dismantled. Please respect any and all people, businesses, or property while you search. Thank you and good luck!

*The contest begins March 1st and ends when all bulls are found. The first free burger day for winners is April 1st or the first day in April BCBB is open. The last day of free burgers is March 31 the following year. Must be 18 years or older to claim a prize. IDs will be checked. Bring your ID. One Golden Bull winner per person and per family. If you find a Golden Bull redeem it in person at Bull City Burger and Brewery during regular business hours. Please email us to let us know you are coming in at (moocow[at]bullcityburgerandbrewery[dot]com). Winners receive one hamburger or veggie burger per week with one $1 topping, one regular dirty fry order and one non-alcohol beverage of choice. No substitutions for specialty burgers or special features. Can’t be used toward a specialty burger. No alcohol included. A week is defined as any hours BCBB is open for business Sunday through Saturday. BCBB cannot be held accountable for acts of God, weather, and business interruptions during any week. Only one free burger meal can be claimed per week. Cannot be used online. Multiple burgers cannot be saved up for redemption in one week. Only the person claiming the Golden Bull can receive the free burger each week. No family members, spouses, former spouses, children, cousins (kissing or otherwise) can claim your prize. Winners consent to the use of their names and photos or likeness by BCBB to promote the contest on the website, in the restaurant and in print. Again, we will check your ID. No employee of BCBB or Pompieri Pizza or Pie Pan Inc. can win. No employee of a business we partner with for the Golden Bull can win. One winner per family please. No repeat winners. No scammers, no loophole finders, no twisters of the rules. It’s free burgers for about a year, that’s pretty good. That’s our fine print.

Golden Bull #1 Winner: Melissa C.
How Melissa found the bull in her own words:
Finding Golden Bull #1 2019:
I LIVE for the golden bull hunt. My friends know that I’ve looked forward to this hunt every year for the past 4 years. I’ve planned scavenger hunts in and around Durham to copy BCBB and even have a little cow statue from Michael's that I painted gold and glued on horns sitting on my windowsill. And finally… I found one!!!!! I was determined to win this year and had my alarm set for 6am today (Mar 1) ready to wait for BCBB to post the first clue. I know this might sound insane to some – but the past few years I’ve come SO close and I couldn’t let it slip past me this year. Last year I was AT GRUB when Ken found it (and had been there the day before, as well).
BCBB had been tweeting to check the website “VERY carefully” – so I thought it meant that there might be a clue hidden on another page. I noticed Friday morning that they updated their tap list – adding cask conditioned Birra Rosa with Hallertau hops. Hmmm… I knew hallertau hops were a german hop so I was thinking about Guglhupf. I was already on my way there (I needed coffee anyways) when the first and only real clue was posted – a picture. I recognized it as the floor when you walk into the restaurant at BCBB. I change my coffee order to take it to-go from Guglhupf and got right back in my car. I sat at the bar at BCBB and was texting my friends about it. We all thought I needed to order the new beer and they might give me a clue or the bull or something else. I ordered the beer and nothing…. Ok I guess I’ll drink a morning beer - by the way it was delicious. I even weirded out the bartender by asking if he had anything else for me – nope, no bull. I sat there chatting and brainstorming trying to think of where else it might be and scanning the walls/ceiling. One my friends (CHLOE HEYYYY) texted me and suggested I follow the red line on the floor (also from the picture). The bartender had mentioned that they had put up the golden bull art the day prior - it just so happened to be near the end of the red line on the floor. When I looked at the walls – there was one picture that didn’t have a golden bull in it. It was 2 of the employees hiding behind a hop plant on the back patio and it was hanging sideways on the wall. At that point, I knew I was close! Seth was there and probably laughing at me for taking so long to realize.
I was searching out back for about an hour. In drainage pipes, in leaves, in the space in between signs and the wall… I kept finding these tiny gold pieces of confetti and it was driving me insane. I knew I had to be close because the BCBB staff kept checking on me (wondering why I was so slow in finding it haha). I was crawling around on the ground when another golden bull hunter showed up – so I started to panic. I couldn’t give up! Luckily he was one of the winner’s from a previous year. Over on the side of the building, there was a seemingly abandoned planter. I moved some of the greenery to the side, revealing a stack of the plastic things they put little plants in to take home. No way… I picked them up and immediately gasped because it was heavier than it should have been – and I knew. I HAD FOUND THE GOLDEN BULL!!!!!!!! Actually a dream come true. THANK YOU to the Bull City Burger & Brewery family – I was SO excited to come in and get high fives from the team. Best day ever!!!!

Golden Bull #2 Winner: Joel L.
How Joel found the bull in his own words:
Finding Golden Bull #2 2019:
I’ve been Golden Bull hunting for at least the last four years. Not only is solving the clues such a fulfilling experience, the Hunt also builds a sense of community around itself—there are a number of regular Hunters I’ve come to expect to run into at least once every March. I’ve been frustratingly close several times: last year, I was at the softball stadium when Lauren found Bull #2 after an exciting day-long hunt, and then a week later, a friend who has been a crucial contributor to my Bull Hunting (hi Rebecca!) drove from Raleigh to meet me at Claymakers, only to walk up as someone shouted that it had been found. So I entered 2019 more determined than ever to finally find an elusive Golden Bull.
Clue #1 dropped on Wednesday, and I knew that Rita reliving life was a reference to Edge of Tomorrow, conveniently played by Emily Blunt. A quick IMDb search showed that she had previously played Mike in the movie Arthur Newman, part of which was filmed in Durham. As is my tendency, I jumped to way too many conclusions from Clue #1: movies in Durham ... could the Hunt tie into the release of the new movie set in Durham, The Best of Enemies? Could it just be pointing to Durham’s best-known film, Bull Durham? I decided to scout around the old Durham Athletic Park after work, and while my hunt was unfruitful, it did provide some insight: I unwittingly parked right in front of Stone Brothers, right by the DAP.
When Clue #2 was posted, I interpreted it as a reference to the Stone Brothers business, and thought my previous hunch about Bull Durham was correct. We were now at two movies filmed in Durham: Arthur Newman and Bull Durham. Starting to sense a theme.
By the time Clue #3 was released, I had already done some research into things filmed in Durham, so the name Natalie immediately struck a chord. Natalie Wood had filmed the movie Brainstorm in Durham, released in 1983. A quick Google showed the film’s dedication matched the clue: “To Natalie.”
Clue #4 stumped me for a while. My brain went back to Bull Durham, thinking the number displayed on the calculator was a baseball statistic. On base percentage? Slugging percentage? I flipped the image upside down to look for a word, and noticed it spelled “eggo.” Another set of friends (thanks Will and Whitney!) pointed out the Stranger Things connection, and we were 4 for 4 with movies/TV shows with Durham connections.
Clue #5 provided a set of riddles, each of which was tied to one of the previous clue answers in some way. I knew “golf pro” referred to Arthur Newman, “upside down” referred to Stranger Things, and that “the wind up and the pitch” was Bull Durham, which meant the first clue had to be Brainstorm. And of course, X marks the spot. While most of the blanks were easy enough to figure out, I thankfully had the timestamps and movie trailers to confirm my thoughts. At [2:23] in the Brainstorm trailer, the word “playback” appears. At [0:42] in the Arthur Newman trailer: “ice.” [1:37] in the Stranger Things trailer gave me “eleven,” and [0:25] in the Bull Durham trailer confirmed “luck.” Play - Ice - Eleven - Luck. P-I-E-L. With an X in the middle: pixel.
I rushed to the Pixel Wall at Durham Central Park, hoping I hadn’t been beaten but expecting to run into other Hunters. To my surprise and delight, I was there alone, so I knew I had some time to examine the wall. I considered the possibility that the Bull was hidden behind one of the blocks and that I’d have to remove all of them to find it, but thankfully decided to first look behind the physical structure, where I found the Bull sitting on top of one corner of the wall. Finally! Thanks so much to BCBB for organizing such a fun event ... and for the free burgers!

Golden Bull #3 Winner: Matt D.
How Matthew found the bull in his own words:
Fourth times a charm! I started bull hunting in 2016 and have come painfully close to finding the bull over the years but have had a great time. Last years team event was fantastic!
For this bull, some trivia/scavenger hunting enthusiast friends joined along (shout out to the wall family!). After a quick lesson in instagram, we figured out the first clue was pompieri pretty quickly and although my girlfriend (Amanda) and I weren’t downtown yet, the walls quickly abandoned their brunch at Beyu Cafe only to find another clue on their way out! Recognizing 21c in the background they headed to the loaf area for the next clue and quickly solved for dashi. The next one was tricky but luckily Amanda learned to hem pants at Sew Crafty and recognized the location! In the final clue, I would read Western Bank in the photo and a quick Google led us to the current board of elections, where that to our luck at Beyu, we were the first to arrive but could not locate the bull. We checked the building and the current boe location farther down parrish street to no avail. Here is wehre other hunters started to show up and our minds went down some deep rabbit holes involving the constellation taurus, the pleiades, and the seven stars of the durham flag. Knowing some of the crazy puzzles BCBB had in the past, these didn’t feel like too big of a stretch at the time. Looking in completely the wrong places (Carolina Theater, YMCA, Durham Armory, etc) and feeling lost, we grabbed some lunch at Bull McCabe’s to reset. Without any new or better ideas we decided to check the BOE one more time, three hours after our first visit. Most people had left but a family I’ve run into the last two years were searching (good luck!), and miraculously I found the bull nestled in a corner on the backside of the building!! I sprinted to my teammeates receiving the biggest adrenaline rush I’ve had in some time, and the four of us grabbed a BCBB beer to celebrate.

I'm so excited to have finally found a Golden Bull! I've been hoping to find one ever since I moved to Durham. Our team of three (Casey, Lyell, and myself) weren't able to participate in the 1st or 3rd hunts this year, and we didn't get very far with the 2nd bull despite our best effort. Luckily Lyell and Casey (henceforth to be referred to as LC) were able to pick up my slack and start the bull hunt without me because I had to work this very weekend. After they called me to discuss the super enticing extra hints, I really had my hopes up for finding this bull!
Since many of the clues for the previous bulls this year came out around noon and were located in BCBB or in the surrounding downtown area, the plan was to meet up at the restaurant at 11:30 and wait for the final hint. We assumed it would be a cipher to decode the hints we picked up volunteering. Casey discovered that the symbols on the hints spelled out the name of the color that they were written in, which was a huge breakthrough. Who knew that someone so handsome and charming could also be so intelligent?
Casey and Lyell had deciphered most of the letters pretty quickly, but were a bit perplexed by the rest of the map. Luckily they phoned in again for my genius advice and I recognized the sun mural so they headed that way. They spotted the pink building (red plus white) on the way there, and so were able to get the symbol for "two" by counting the doors. The team got the word "green" from the colored rays of the mural, which left only one unknown symbol by the X. That strange shape in the center of the map appeared in front of them when they turned around, and so they figured that the BCC bus stop in front of the Durham County Administration building may have a clue. After some time and dead ends, LC thought perhaps the last symbol could represent the word "go" which was found on a nearby bus stop sign above the word "Durham".
The boys plugged the phrase "Green To Go" into Google, and sure enough there is a sustainability program by that name in Durham. As you can tell, my role in the hunt was pretty much over by now. There were many participating restaurants all around us, but LC decided the treasure map indicated that we should go 5 BCC stops down towards the intersection of Duke and Main. They had a hunch that the three lines below the X on the map translated into a pace count and compass directions (36NW, 46NE, 16NW), but obviously they never bothered to count because Rose's was the only eatery nearby that participated in Green To Go. Maybe Rose's was also related to the flower seeds that came with the map?
Casey eyed the Green To Go box outside Rose's and after a cursory search was prepared to look inside for a clue. But then Lyell lowered his hot, tight bod down to the the grimy ground and reached his beautiful forearm underneath the box. When he stood up, he had the bull!
We decided that I would get all of the glory (I look fabulous in that photo, right...) and would turn in the bull because neither Lyell nor Casey is reliably around town, and I live just a few minutes away from BCBB. Whenever they are downtown and hungry for a burger, I will happily treat them!

The hunt for the Golden Bulls is more than just a huge puzzle, it is an opportunity to get people involved in the community, and show them new and interesting things that are happening in Durham. This year, Golden Bull #4 (or as we lovingly call it, “The Sustaina-bull”) is all about ways to get involved in sustaining Durham for the future. We are excited to have partnered with lots of community organizations to make The Sustaina-bull epic!

How Cayla found the bull in her own words:
I am SUPER excited to have found the last golden bull of 2019! This is the second year of bull hunting for my husband and me, and I’ve become obsessed with finding the bull (I clear my weekends in March for this!). We've been so close so many times, only to have that sweet victory burger yanked from our mouths when someone beat us to it right at the end. Here’s how it went down finding Golden Bull #5.
Clue #1: There’s a new taproom in town - My husband and I initially thought this was Hi-Wire, but we were definitely off (stay tuned for why...)
Clue #2: 6 stacked eggs (and a single broken one) with random letters on them - This one made no sense at first, but a smart friend of ours (Thanks JM Bartelt!) figured out that the letters were days of the week. One of the two "S" eggs was cracked open, but they were not in order, so we weren't sure if that meant Saturday or Sunday.
Clue #3: Crossing sign with a feather on it - We immediately noticed that the grass under the sign spelled ‘why’ several times. We then figured that the feather was from a chicken, so the clue was a reference to "Why did the chicken cross the road?” Two chicken-related clues in a row? A coincidence? I think not...
Clue #4: The Beermuda Triangle - This was the most clever one, I thought. Shoutout to my husband, Logan, and friends for being beer detectives! The 3 points on the map—a griffin, unicorn, and dragon—were each on the labels of Corona (Mexican), Mythos (Greek), and Kirin (Japanese) beers. I thought it was most likely referring to restaurants in Durham that serve those foods, and the X between them was where the bull was going to be waiting
Clue #5: Vivid Eyries Turn - When this came out on Saturday, my mind went in all kinds of directions. We looked up the definition of "eyries" to see that is was another word for an eagle's nest. Was this a reference to NC Central, whose mascot is the eagle? Was there an eagle statue sitting somewhere in downtown Durham? Could it be a reference to the infamous castle in Game of Thrones, where the sellsword Bronn saved Tyrion Lannister from being tossed out the Moon Door? I gave up on Saturday afternoon and continued enjoying the beautiful NC weather. However, Sunday I woke up thinking that the words could be a jumble, because NOTHING about it made any sense. Lo and behold, it unjumbled to be "University Drive." Now we’re getting somewhere....
We also noticed in the BCBB Twitter feed that Seth posted a picture of his trunk with a folding table, ladder, cooler, and tent, and immediately started thinking that he’s setting up for an event. I thought back through all the clues. Maybe the new taproom isn’t open yet and BCBB is opening a new one on University Drive. The stacked eggs my husband figured out were a reference to Chick-Fil-A and the fact that it’s closed on Sundays. We looked for a Japanese, Greek, and Mexican restaurant that created a triangle near Chick-Fil-A off of University Drive, and sure enough we (and by we, I really mean my husband) found Sake Bomb, Saladelia, and El Rodeo right in that area and if you positioned the X from Clue #4 it was the old Chick-Fil-A across the street from the new one (Clue #3 now makes sense). We got in our car and started driving down University (we didn’t bother waiting for Clue #6, which was a puzzle that gave the address). We spotted Seth setting up in the parking lot and immediately rushed over there. Although Seth was surprised to see us there before the final clue had dropped that morning, we began to search the area. It took us almost an hour of scouring the property, but we finally found the bull! I had a quick emotional melt-down and then my husband and I enjoyed a Bull City Porter with Seth to celebrate!
BCBB is opening a new taproom in the fall of 2019 called Bull City Solera and Taproom right there at the old Chick-Fil-A on University Drive! The barrels in the clues represent the solera barrel aging technique they plan to use in the new location. I can’t wait to try the beer when they open, and I can't wait to get my free burgers for a year! Thanks BCBB! :)
